People are longing for connection, depth, and authentic relationships. In a culture where true connection is often missing and people are searching for their “village,” the desire for genuine community is stronger than ever. As we strive to be a church that is fully alive in Jesus, we see mentoring as a key way to nurture that kind of life, where people come together to pursue Jesus and become more like him.
Many people are seeking wisdom, a listening ear and community but don’t know where to start, and others are eager to share their experiences, pray and care for God’s people, but aren’t sure who to connect with. This program helps connect the dots—pairing godly, experienced individuals with those who can benefit from support and encouragement. Participants have the opportunity to lean in, be honest and vulnerable, and grow together in a meaningful friendship.
At Vernon Alliance, we desire to see generations of new disciples formed—people who are clear in their calling and gifting while growing closer to Jesus. Through mentoring, we long to see people rooted in community, confident in who God has made them to be, and fully alive in the life Jesus invites them into.
Mentoring is a commitment to intentionally walk alongside another person. It is a “dynamic, intentional relationship of trust in which a mentor enables a mentee to maximize the grace of God in his or her life through the Holy Spirit, in service of God’s kingdom purposes, by sharing their life, experience and resources.”
The role of a mentor is to intentionally walk alongside another person to help them notice and respond to God’s activity in their life. A mentor is not primarily a teacher, expert, or problem-solver. Rather they are a friend and companion that do three simple things:
Over time there are opportunities to share some of their own story, offer perspective or share your experience as they, “harvest from their own life what God has been doing, for the benefit of someone else".
Most of us feel inadequate to mentor others well. But mentoring is not reserved for experts, professionals, or wise old saints. Intentionally walking alongside another person is something most people are capable of doing. Mentoring is also a learned skill that grows as it is practiced, nurtured, and shaped over time. As we come led by the Holy Spirit, both humbly and confidently to a mentorship relationship, we discover God uses our unique personality, skills and experience to impact others.
“The truth is, people need our with-ness. They don’t need for us to impress them with how spiritual we are. They need to know they are not alone.” Emily P. Freeman
